Abstract
What explains the recent divergence in political preferences between young and old (Zalc & Buruian,
2019; Gonzalez-Barrera & Connor, 2019)? What will be the consequences of ageing populations for
this divide? To answer these questions, my research will use a systematic, comparative and
quantitative methodology to explore this issue in Europe and the US. Specifically, it will answer
whether it is differences in values or differences in material interests that have caused age groups to
have divergent political preferences, and how these conflicts will change in ageing societies
