Exploring emergent human-robot interactions and work configurations in critical organizational contexts

Lead Research Organisation: Lancaster University
Department Name: Management Science

Abstract

Advances in artificial intelligence (AI), robotics and automation present both game-changing
opportunities and existential threats to business and organisations (Sebastian et al., 2020).
Understanding how to integrate intelligent systems with human knowledge and efforts is
therefore important to best use these technologies, while also considering ethical dilemmas in
the management and governance of these systems. These new technologies are generative,
malleable, interactive and open (Klein and Watson-Manheim, 2021), hence they influence
the nature of work, alter existing leadership styles and create new capabilities and
organisational structures, making their management a complex technical and social task
(Baptista et al., 2020). This study will explore the emergent integration of autonomous multirobot
(AMR) technology and swarm robotics in organisations, especially in the context of
environmental monitoring and disaster prevention and handling. Moreover, it will investigate
how these technologies can be aligned with fundamental human values as expressed in the
United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDG), particularly ensuring they act
responsibly, contributing to the literature on social responsibility and information systems
security.
