The co-design of a psychoeducational tool for teachers of young people with Obsessive Compulsive Disorder(OCD)

Lead Research Organisation: University of Sheffield
Department Name: Education

Abstract

This project is firmly located within the ECY pathway. Located in an
educational setting, it is focused on increasing mental health literacy in
primary school teachers and other education professionals to understand
OCD and increase confidence in noticing signs of OCD in their pupils. This
will raise and identify gaps in provision in schools and on improving
outcomes for this population. Put simply, if OCD is identified and
subsequently treated then the young person is more likely to receive the
support they need from both clinical and education professionals in school,
increasing their ability to access education.
The study will involve educational knowledge production and result in a
psychoeducational resource to enhance OCD mental health literacy in
primary school teachers which will inform practices and increase inclusion
in education for this population. The study fits well into the pathway
because it will explore what teachers and other stakeholders feel they need
to know to help them work with these young people and to provide
appropriate support for them. The use of co-production and innovative
methods is driven by an ethical approach that centres the desire to
promote equality of access to education for young people with OCD or
suspected OCD.
