Epigenetics contribution to plant genome evolution

Lead Research Organisation: University of Birmingham
Department Name: Sch of Biosciences

Abstract

This PhD project will investigate the genetic and epigenetic mechanism underlying epigenetic switches in plants and their impact on plant plasticity and evolution). It aims to unravel the mechanisms underlying epigenome instability. To achieve this, the epiRILs progeny (met1 x wild type) will be used, which exhibit various epigenetic status across the whole genome despite having the same DNA Sequence. Additionally, the project will investigate the role of epigenetic marks in regulating Transposable elements (TEs), which are mobile DNA elements capable of changing their position within the genome, contributing to genome plasticity and evolution in plants. This PhD project offers an opportunity to investigate the genetic and epigenetic aspects of plant biology, leveraging genomics and experimental data to unravel the mechanisms controlling epigenetic switches. The ultimate goal is to apply the knowledge gained to improve crop plants for agricultural purposes.
