In good faith? an ethnographic exploration of faith-sensitive RSE provision in predominantly Muslim-faith primary schools.

Abstract

The proposed research aims to explore the extent to which secular and religious discourses mediate children's, teachers' and parents' views and experiences of (RSE) primary school provision in the different policy contexts of England and Wales. The sample will comprise one primary school in Cardiff (Wales) and one in Birmingham (England) in majority Muslim communities. The research will explore the potential for a longitudinal case-study approach and utilize the affordances of ethnographic and qualitative research methods that allow the three cohorts of participants (children, parents, and teachers) to share their views and experiences of RSE provision. The research recognises the significant ethical issues and its focus and will be subject to approval by the ethics committee. The supervisory team (Renold is co-chair of the Ethics Committee), however, foresee no potential problems in obtaining approval, with a range of sexuality education-focused projects underway in the school (undergraduate/postgraduate/staff).
