Robust, Controllable Geopolymer Binders for Waste Forms
Lead Research Organisation:
University of Sheffield
Department Name: Materials Science and Engineering
Abstract
-Understand and characterise robust, controllable geopolymer binders for production of lower-CO2 wasteforms
-Define the accessible working envelope for geopolymer cements for conditioning of problematic waste streams (e.g. organic-rich liquids, sludges, ion exchangers)
-Map and understand any potential interferences between components of key identified waste streams and geopolymer binders, to ensure that wasteform behaviour can be fully controlled
-Identify inorganic additives that can be used to enhance the robustness, reliability and controllability of geopolymer rheology, setting, and product performance
-Quantify the CO2 emissions savings that may potentially be achieved through the use of geopolymers in place of conventional cements
