Structure and Dynamics of the Porcupine Magma-Poor Continental Margin from new Ocean Bottom Seismometer Data

Lead Research Organisation: University of Birmingham
Department Name: Sch of Geography, Earth & Env Sciences

Abstract

The project will include the use of brand-new ocean bottom seismometer data and co-located industrial multi-channel seismic data. This project will complete the mapping of the Porcupine Basin an exemplar of a magma-poor rift, to reveal the symmetry of rifting, and degree of water ingress to the mantle during continental break-up. Part of the project will be comparing with data from Galicia (Spain), the site of Birmingham-proposed IODP drilling and a Birmingham-led NSF/NERC 3D seismic imaging programme this will allow us to test hypotheses for the dynamics and temporal evolution of magma-poor rifts.
