Modular superconducting axial flux electrical machines for large scale civil aircraft

Lead Research Organisation: University of Strathclyde
Department Name: Electronic and Electrical Engineering

Abstract

This project will study the axial-flux superconducting motor for aviation applications, focusing on how modular design can help scale-up the motor rating. The candidate will use finite element software to simulate axial-flux superconducting motors, with variations in the number of rotor and stator disks. The candidate will study both the superconducting rotor and superconducting stator, using the second generation high temperature superconductors. A design methodology for a fixed rating modular will be developed, and the possibilities to scale-up the machine rating using modular design will be explored. At the end of the project, a MW level motor will be conceptually designed, with its mechanical and electrical performances evaluated using simulation tools.
