Exploring quantum information with Higgs Bosons and Top Quarks

Lead Research Organisation: University of Glasgow
Department Name: School of Physics and Astronomy

Abstract

The key objectives of the research are to test Bell inequalities and other predictions of quantum information at unprecedented high energies in qubit (top-pair) and qutrit (Higgs boson) systems. Quantum information studies such as these have never been explored at hadron colliders before and have never been explored anywhere at these energies. Furthermore, the Higgs component of the project will involve isolating the H->WW->lepton + jets final state, an as-yet untested and unobserved Higgs decay mode. The student will set up the entire analysis using data from the ATLAS detector, from event selection and uncertainty estimation, through to result interpretation and exploitation, including developing novel techniques to isolate the signal events and subtract background processes that are not of interest.
