Multicomponent Supramolecular Gels

Lead Research Organisation: University of Glasgow
Department Name: School of Chemistry

Abstract

We have recently been forming gel noodles using supramolecular gels to prepare aligned structures. The noodles are microns in width, and we have developed a method such that length is restricted only by the volume of liquid extruded. We will examine if these noodles could be used to form threads and yarns, with real advantages in terms of reproducible, highly pure materials from cheap synthesis, controlled mechanical properties and the potential to incorporate other chemical signals. By controlling the self-assembly, the noodles could be formed comprising of highly aligned molecules, allowing conducting wires to be formed and functional textiles. Multiple components will be used, allowing a level of control such that we can spatially direct assembly, interactions, and networks across all length scales to enable the de novo construction of fibres that can be spun into yarns.
