Anosteocytic bone remodelling as a potential evolutionary biomimetic route for tissue engineering

Lead Research Organisation: University of Glasgow
Department Name: School of Engineering

Abstract

Bone fractures are a public health issue around the world and pose a serious economic burden, and

are expected to increase with an ageing population and the increased prevalence of associated

disorders such as osteoporosis. Tissue engineering has been tackling this issue from different angles,

building on our natural capability to regenerate bone. Regenerative medicine could

benefit from exploration of emerging mechanisms that might be stimulated to induce bone

reconstruction, adopting an evolutionary biomimetic strategy.
