Multi-Pass Superconducting Energy Recovery Linacs - Accelerator Physics Design for Future Facilities

Lead Research Organisation: Lancaster University
Department Name: Physics

Abstract

In this project the student will investigate optimisation of PERLE, EIC Cooler and UK-XFEL which all incorporate aspects of a multi-pass, recirculating CW SC linacs. The accelerator physics challenge to be addressed is finding a common framework to determine optimum system configurations such that robust control of collective effects (space charge, coherent and incoherent SR, microbunching) can be achieved with minimal cost. The emphasis will be on taking the design process to a state of maturity beyond "test facility" for this class of machines, looking at the system architecture and design optimisation. The student will participate in beamline design, then construct high fidelity simulations to predict overall system performance and connect these to analytic and semi-analytic models.
