Abstract

Despite the migrants' major motivation being the search for better living conditions, what they often find
in the new place of residence are difficulties in accessing a dignified life. Some of them end up in
extremely precarious conditions, even living on the streets.
This research purpose is to study the intersection of migrants' homeless histories with social structures,
discovering: What social structures are affecting migratory processes and intensifying migrants'
difficulties in Rio de Janeiro and London? How? What is the path migrants take until reaching
homelessness in these new places of residence? How did COVID-19 complexify this problem?
Rio and London are metropolises, attracting many migrants. Studying these two different contexts will be
analyzed how migratory processes occur both in developed and underdeveloped countries.
The data will be collected via semi-structured interviews. To find respondents, I will partner with CENTRO
POP- Specialized Reference Center for Homeless Population - and Cáritas - a third sector religious
institution that assists migrants - located in Rio, which will require overseas fieldwork - and Caritas
Westminster, located in London. Participants will be asked about their life history, what it has been like to
live in a new country and how the government and the third sector intervention affect their lives.
This research will make recommendations based on its findings for measures to be taken across Brazil
and UK to support migrants experiencing homelessness. The knowledge will be written up as part of a
PhD thesis.
