The Extremes Of Stellar Death

Lead Research Organisation: Liverpool John Moores University
Department Name: Astrophysics Research Institute

Abstract

Events in the extremes of the transient parameter space, such as Superluminous Supernovae (SLSNe), Fast Blue Optical Transients (FBOTs) and Tidal Disruption Events (TDEs), are underexplored compared with other transient classes. This is due to factors such as their intrinsic rarity in the case of SLSNe and TDEs, and also their rapid nature in the case of FBOTs, which may be missed due to limitations in transient sky survey cadences.
The broad aim of this project is to use transients found by optical sky surveys such as the Zwicky Transient Facility (ZTF) and follow up observations with facilities such as the Liverpool Telescope (LT) to study different examples of these extreme transients should they be detected, as well as studying them more systematically at magnitudes > 19 where classifications are less well established.
