Sustainable development of biofuels

Lead Research Organisation: University of Surrey
Department Name: Chemical Engineering

Abstract

Energy usage is closely linked to climate change because most of the energy we consume (in cars, homes, industry, and transportation) comes from fossil fuels. The world population continues to grow while improving living standards increasing energy needs and inevitably greenhouse gas emissions. Sustainable alternative energy sources are urgently needed to
reduce the impact on climate change. In this project, we will investigate the sustainable development of biofuels. We will study the potential of process intensification in conjunction with the utilization of waste biomass to develop integrated continuous reactors. We will identify the technical feasibility of the manifold at industrial scale and conditions. Different
strategies for designing modular reactors will be investigated for two-phase systems using parallel small-scale units.
