Abstract
This research aims to uncover transgender people's experiences of clubbing cultures by exploring how they navigate different nightlife scenes. I am most interested in analysing how clubbing experiences inform trans people's understanding of their communities; and wish to do so by researching the ways nightlife and its different scenes can be both beneficial (community building, opportunities for gender experimentation) and risky (violence, misgendering, othering) for trans life. I plan to focus my research on scenes in Manchester, which has a long history of club culture and an active LGBT community.
Research questions:
1. What kinds of nightlife spaces do trans people frequent in Manchester?
2. What are the dangers present in these environments for transgender people? What characterises 'safe(r)' clubs to them?
3. How can involvement in clubbing cultures help trans people build communities that translate to their everyday lives, and/or how do trans people's clubbing experiences affect their broader understanding of community?
