The Poetic is Political: An Ethnographic Study of Contemporary Womens Poetry in Beirut, Lebanon

Lead Research Organisation: University of Manchester
Department Name: Social Sciences

Abstract

The project approaches poetry as both an object of observation and mode of enquiry, to investigate the questions:
1) How is the politics of contemporary women's poetry in Beirut evolving; and what is the political significance of innovations in poetic forms including performance, film, and mixed media poetry?
2) What kinds of spaces do the composition and performance of poetry create and to what extent are these spaces subversive and prefigurative?
3) How can the composition and performance of poetry be used to generate a research context for the expression of tacit and embodied experiences
and the exploration of inchoate ideas and political perspectives?
4) How can placing poetry and creative audio-visual methods in dialogue generate new epistemological contexts and ethnographic insights into embodied, affective, and imaginative dimensions of experience that are otherwise hard to grasp?
