Efficient and Flexible Point-to-Multipoint Content Distribution in 5G and Beyond

Lead Research Organisation: University of Surrey

Abstract

This project is to investigate novel techniques for supporting point-to-multipoint dissemination of multimedia content based on
5G and beyond networks. Since its roll-out in 2019, 5G has been able to offer enhanced user experiences especially in real-time multimedia applications. However, many live multimedia content needs to be simultaneously transmitted to a large number of end user devices (e.g. live sports events), which has not yet been well supported by 5G in terms of network efficiency. To solve this key technical issue, the target of this project is to design, implement and evaluate novel algorithms and mechanisms for enabling point-to-multipoint multicast techniques and protocols over 5G network infrastructure (including 5G radio) in order to simultaneously improve user quality of experiences (QoE) and network efficiency. Simulation/testbed based experiments and evaluations will be carried out in the project.
