Computational and experimental analysis of the role of ageing hallmarks in age-related frailty

Lead Research Organisation: UNIVERSITY COLLEGE LONDON
Department Name: Cell and Developmental Biology

Abstract

As people get older they become at increased risk of disability and frailty. The
biological mechanisms of ageing are increasingly well understood and include, for
instance, declining control of gene expression, stem cells and immunity. These ageing
hallmarks can be targeted with drugs, in both laboratory animals and humans, to
improve health during ageing. This project will exploit the rich information in multiple
databases, including UK Biobank and the research literature, to identify the key ageing
hallmarks that lead to age-related problems, and that could be targeted to combat
them. Depending on student interests, experimental follow up would be possible.
