Exploring LGBT+ Fans' Experiences in English Football Stadia

Abstract

This project embodies wellbeing, health and communities through focusing
on the wellbeing for LGBTQ+ football fans. Football spectatorship can
produce a sense of wellbeing being by fostering a sense of belonging,
community, and social inclusion which can benefit those that belong to
marginalised groups by promoting social integration and a sense of
belonging. The explores football fans experiences of attending football
matches including the positive aspects as well as the discrimination and
exclusion they feel. These findings will be utilised to inform inclusive policy
and practice for fans that sit at the margins in a bid to improve wellbeing
among these groups. This project aims to tackle the grand challenges of
health and wellbeing by drawing on the experiences of those from
marginalised communities gathered through the use of an innovative
methodological approach using text based platforms for focus group
participation; thus contributing to the development of effective research
approach's with marginalised groups. The project is supported by
multi-disciplinary advisors drawing from Social Work and Social Care and
Sociology.
