Abstract
Integrated photonics is a technology used in many fields, including communications, sensing and ranging. This research investigates novel CMOS compatible photonic architectures, monolithically or hybrid integrated with non-linear material to implement all-optical neural networks. Design and simulation of integrated photonics components will be carried out using simulation tools such as Finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) and finite element method (FEM). The fabrication of the CMOS compatible photonics chip has been and will be carried out in UK foundries, while the back end of the line integration of other materials will be done in-house. The characterisation will include transmission measurement of the devices. Results from the design and measurement will be used to improve and enrich the integrated photonics components and subsystems portfolio, which will be used by companies and industry via in-house fabrication or via publicly available foundry services.
