Offshore Wind - Addressing the challenges of carbon, climate resilience and cost.

Lead Research Organisation: University of Edinburgh
Department Name: Sch of Engineering

Abstract

Aim 1 Create guidelines for analysis of GHG emissions resulting from OWFs to develop an improved
modular Carbon Assessment tool incorporating LCA.
Review methods, software, databases, standards, and indices used for carbon footprint assessment
to prepare carbon footprint practice recommendation.
Develop a modular Carbon Assessment tool for OWF at different development stages incorporating
LCA.
Apply the new tool to analyse effects of design (foundation type, size of wind turbine, distance
from the shore), vessel decarbonisation due to the IMO targets, and grid intensity on carbon
footprint of OWFs.
Aim 2 Develop a GIS tool for assessment of environmental impacts driven by climate change on
OWFs depending on location and varying time-scales.
Review impacts of climate change relevant to OWFs to determine their severity and time-scales.
Determine geographical boundaries and time-scales of climate models needed for the tool.
Develop a GIS tool that analyses environmental conditions driven by different climate change
scenarios.
Use the developed tool to assess the significance of climate change impacts on site availability,
OWF design, and O&M of future and already existing OWFs.
