'Modelling and simulation of microstructure and defect evolution in Additive Manufacturing

Abstract

Additive manufacture has the potential of fabricating of parts with novel designs not possible with traditional manufacturing routes, as well as, enabling location specific tailoring of properties for functional optimisation of the part. However, process-induced microstructure and defect variations and associated scatter in mechanical properties make certification of AM parts challenging. This project will focus on the development of a physics-based modelling capability for predicting the non-equilibrium microstructures during additive manufacture of titanium alloys. A multiscale materials modelling approach will be adopted that enables simulation of the solidification structures such dendrites, solid-state phase transitions and voids. A representative volume element of the AM part will provide a link between the process-induced microstructures and process parameters.
