Assessing the Influence of Land Use Dynamics on Sustainable Aviation Fuel Production

Lead Research Organisation: CRANFIELD UNIVERSITY
Department Name: School of Water, Energy and Environment

Abstract

This research aims to assess the critical relationship between land use decisions and the viability of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) from crops. Spatial methods will be employed to analyse land suitability for SAF feedstock cultivation. For the production phase, differing land-use models will be utilized to investigate the agricultural productivity potential without impacting or displacing existing food production, attempting to keep a balanced agro-ecosystem with greater crop diversity promoting resilience. Both environmental and economic trade-offs for SAF production will be analysed across the land use models employed. Additionally, future climate scenarios will be integrated to assess the potential impact on crop yields and suitable land availability for production. Combining these methodologies allows for the identification of areas that are both suitable and resilient for SAF production. By considering environmental, economic, and social factors, this research aims to identify optimal land use strategies that ensure sustainable and resilient SAF production without compromising food security or vital natural ecosystems. This research will provide a holistic view of the implications of SAF from crops, addressing a critical gap by examining the relationship between land use decisions and sustainability of SAF production. The findings will inform policy development and provide a framework for assessing land suitability for SAF crops to aid in making sustainable land use decisions in the transition to sustainable aviation.
