Forced Migration and the Production of Everyday Spaces in Arrival Neighbourhoods in England
Lead Research Organisation:
University of Sheffield
Department Name: Urban Studies and Planning
Abstract
This project speaks directly to the "Cities, Environment, and Liveability"
Pathway, tackling some of the most pressing issues that it seeks to explore
in relation to human resettlement and social exclusion. It directly addresses
urban inequalities and injustices that are foregrounded in the Pathway. In
particular through a novel focus on the lived experience of forced migrants
at the neighbourhood level, and to developing new ways of understanding
the complex urbanisation and migration process. The original focus on
everyday spaces of migrants, the active role of migrants in the production
of spaces, and the role of spatial design and policy contributes to CEL
themes: spaces, places and mobilities; and housing policy and practice.
Moreover, in highlighting the entanglements between forced migration and
urban design and planning decisions, it resonates strongly with thematic
attention to 'inequalities and injustices relating to the impacts of [...] crises
and/or of the policies and approaches that seek to tackle these challenges'.
