Data Driven Control of Urban Drainage Systems

Lead Research Organisation: University of Sheffield
Department Name: Civil and Structural Engineering

Abstract

The project will focus on developing a simple autonomous water quality control algorithm for the CENTAUR system, based on water quality datasets collected by EMS at a number of Severn Trent Water (STW) SSO impact field study sites, where water quality upstream and downstream of SSOs is monitored to understand impacts. Use of the data for this project has been agreed by STW. The specific steps are as follows

1. Review the existing CENTAUR RTC system, condition and performance of existing installations and available datasets from these sites. Review relevant literature on UDS RTC and water quality impacts from SSOs.
2. Review and analyse available datasets from range of available STW study sites to understand and quantify the impact of SSOs on receiving waters and define a range of water quality objectives for an updated RTC system.
3. Review datasets from current CENTAUR installations in STW to understand the performance of the existing hydraulically based control algorithm (based on UDS water level measurements only) on receiving water quality.
4. Develop candidate control options for CENTAUR based on the use of real time measurements of water level + different combinations of environmental and water quality data for defined water quality objectives. Discuss and review options with EMS staff to develop preferred approaches considering sensing/data needs.
5. Conduct virtual testing of selected control approaches at trail sites and compare performance with existing control system. This will be based on a consideration of the potential reduction in environmental harm and receiving water quality under revised RTC control algorithms.
6. Update control algorithm within CENTAUR and test approaches at sites nominated by EMS.
