Lead Research Organisation: University of Cambridge
Department Name: Faculty of Education

Abstract

Research Questions: 1. To what extent and in what ways is the bridging of the empathy gap a useful concept for engaging GCSE resit learners in FE? 2. To what extent and in what ways is the 'Teach the Teacher' intervention a useful tool for FE colleges to implement as a means of engaging GCSE resit learners? In order to fully answer these research questions, a re-iterative development and evaluation of a research-informed intervention approach is needed. The literature and paucity of it, has cause will be utilised consisting of : an Interrupted Time Series (ITS) design allowing for comparison and measurement of impact (Michielutte et al., 2000) and design based research, facilitating the evolvement of the intervention, based on findings along the way (Meeuwissen et al., 2022). The impact of the intervention with thirty different groups and teachers, across a variety of different colleges in the UK will be studied. It will be a mixed methods study, using a combination of focus groups, interviews, questionnaires and attendance and attainment results to measure the impact in response to the research questions.
