Testing the Role of Statistical Learning in Infant Language Development

Lead Research Organisation: University of Liverpool
Department Name: Psychology

Abstract

This project will test the hypothesis that infants' ability to track statistics in the speech they hear plays a foundational role in their language development by: 1) developing assessments of statistical learning and its role in early language development that are suitable for infants at and under one year of age; 2) refining the measures of learning that are captured in these assessments; and 3) using these measures to test whether individual differences in statistical learning are related to real-world language development across the second year.
