Sex work, digital rights and freedoms: Creating safer online working environments across Europe
Lead Research Organisation:
University of Sheffield
Department Name: Sociological Studies
Abstract
The studentship directly fits the Data, Communication and New Technologies Pathway, addressing
a number of its grand challenges, including: "how [the] social dynamics [of sex work] shape and
are shaped by digital infrastructures"; it will address challenges relating to the social, economic and
political nature of "data, information production and use, including metrics and algorithm bias" and
the relationship between "platform governance, surveillance or censorship" in shaping the safety
and security of sex workers. It will do so by exploring:
how sex workers experience regulation on digital platforms across Europe
what changes may be required to the regulation of digital sex work platforms to improve
sex worker safety.
