Ultimate Temperature Stability in Semiconductor Lasers
Lead Research Organisation:
Queen's University of Belfast
Department Name: Sch of Mathematics and Physics
Abstract
"The aim of this project is to overcome the sensitivity of near-infrared semiconductor lasers to their operating environment, particularly the effect of ambient temperature on output power and wavelength. In conventional lasers, these problems necessitate the use of energy-hungry temperature stabilisation which both complicates and adds cost and energy demands to the laser package. In this project we will explore the use of new laser design approaches to overcome these issues. This will include the use of novel semiconductor alloys and heterostructures. The project will include a combination of design and experimental fabrication and characterisation activities, and the level of each will be tailored to the interests of the students engaged in the project.
