The employer's role in mitigating mental ill health in young people.

Lead Research Organisation: University of Brighton
Department Name: Doctoral College

Abstract

How can employers help mitigate the impact of the higher prevalence of mental ill health associated with Generation Z, in order to support their performance at work
and their overall wellbeing? The proposed research positions employers as key stakeholders in the wellbeing of young people studying at university. The Job Demands-Resources model (Demerouti et al., 2001) highlights that job demands (such as workload and work-based stress) can be mitigated by job resources (such as staff and organisational support); this PhD aims to investigate the relationship between these work practices and the wider wellbeing of young employees. By
harnessing the employee-voice this research will also help answer the secondary question: In order to support employee performance and wellbeing, where should an
employer's limited resources be directed to best meet the specific needs associated with Generation Z?
