Abstract
The goal of the project is to build models and technologies which work for businesses and people everywhere, with a particular focus on the Global South. The project aims to transform GenAI into a technology that can be used in business contexts everywhere, supporting economic growth across large, mid and low-income regions and disrupting deeply embedded global economic inequities.
Generative AI (GenAI) currently does not work for people situated in the Global South, including those from the African continent. For example, when a small business that provides outdoor experiences tried to produce marketing materials using GenAI, the results were incoherent and not representative of African people or landscape. This is just one of many examples that show how small businesses in the Global South, who would be ready adopters of GenAI, find them unusable.
