Ammonia systems for gas turbine applications

Lead Research Organisation: CARDIFF UNIVERSITY
Department Name: Sch of Engineering

Abstract

This project will examine the compatibility of ammonia with fuel system components in industrial environments such as the fuel delivery system in modern gas turbines. The research will involve laboratory investigation into the behaviour of common materials such as high-temperature steel, polymers, rubbers and flexible seals to understand the potential degradation and embrittlement impact of liquid or gaseous ammonia. The studentship is in conjunction with an international equipment manufacturer, examining the fundamental processes involved in developing components for a net-zero power grid where ammonia is a potential fuel for energy storage and power generation at off-grid locations. Laboratory analysis will involve state-of-the-art characterisation and testing of materials across a range of scales from changes in mechanical properties to microscopy-based measurements to examine changes in properties such as crystalline structure and hydrogen diffusion.
