Evaluation of the Healing Factors and Characteristics of a novel Advanced Biological Wound Dressing Technology

Lead Research Organisation: University of Manchester
Department Name: Engineering and Physical Sciences

Abstract

Mechanisms for the healing of chronic wounds and the means by which advanced biological wound dressing technologies are able to influence wound healing are still not fully understood.
Better understanding of these mechanisms through both pre-clinical and clinical studies will enable clinicians to better manage complex wounds, healing those wounds faster and with lower risk of recurrence.
This research project will address the improved pre-clinical characterisation of an advanced biological wound dressing technology and determine which compositional and structural factors within the technology are influencing cell migration, cell growth, blood vessel growth and connective tissue reformation, as the fundamental mechanisms that contribute to wound healing.
Through this research project, better knowledge of these wound healing mechanisms can be gained to ensure that further improved technologies are developed to meet the challenge of non-healing wounds.
