Applications of novel optical technologies in communications

Lead Research Organisation: University of Southampton
Department Name: Optoelectronics Research Centre (ORC)

Abstract

In response to an ever-increasing demand for communication traffic and the introduction of new wireless communication standards, there is an immediate and urgent need for a range of solutions in optical communications that will enable the implementation of flexible, high-capacity, low-latency and low power consumption communication networks. As a result, and with support of funding received by the Government and UKRI, researchers at Southampton and elsewhere, are developing a range of novel technologies to support the transmission, amplification and processing of optical signals. This PhD project will aim at exploiting some of these novel technologies for applications in communication systems. This will be a highly experimental project, relying on the facility of the Communication Systems lab of the ORC. The outcomes of the project will contribute to ongoing collaborative activities with external partners, with whom occasional collaboration may be required.
