Development of Multi-Disciplinary Tools for Assessment of Permafrost Degradation on Road Transport Infrastructure

Lead Research Organisation: Queen's University Belfast
Department Name: Sch of Natural and Built Environment

Abstract

Permafrost environments are extremely susceptible to change as a response to climate change. In turn, this puts vital road transportation network in permafrost regions at risk from this changing landscape. This project seeks to develop a multi-disciplinary framework of survey methods from the disciplines of geography, paleoecology and engineering to assess the extent of permafrost degradation and it's relationship to the structural integrity and durability of remote road networks with a view to informing the management and future development of these networks. The intended study area is North West Territories, Canada.
