Radiation induced heating modelling within nuclear reactor physics simulations

Lead Research Organisation: Imperial College London
Department Name: Mechanical Engineering

Abstract

The aim of this PhD project is to the improve the modelling and simulation (M&S) of neutron and gamma-ray photon radiation induced heating rates within nuclear reactor cores and shields. This improved M&S of neutron and gamma-ray photon radiation induced heating rates with be achieved through the development of improved nuclear data (i.e., microscopic neutron cross-section, gamma-ray photon interaction coefficients and KERMA factors), uncertainty quantification (i.e., neutron and gamma-ray photon cross-section covariance data) as well as the use of modern, parallel, deterministic, coupled neutron and gamma-ray photon transport software such as the Rolls-Royce AVARIS radiation transport M&S framework.
