Abstract

The design of rehabilitative and intelligent technologies inspires me personally and
academically in equal measure. These technologies are crucial to the inclusivity of
disabled people in society and have the potential to provide previously unimaginable
degrees of independence. They also pose a significant scientific challenge, particularly
when it comes to their integration into the real world, in terms of control, feedback and
safety. My MSc project focusses on the design of an intelligent sensor system for gait
which fuses information from IMUs, MMGs and force sensors. The system utilises
machine learning techniques to determine information about the gait phase and the
environment, and touches on its use as a prosthetic echo controller. The project
requires signal processing, machine learning and control algorithm methods and I
hope to apply these skills to a PhD within one of my areas of interest.
