Standardised Equipment or Specialist Groups? The Role of Archery Aboard Mary Rose

Lead Research Organisation: University of Southampton
Department Name: Sch of Engineering

Abstract

The aim of the project is to improve our understanding of the longbows aboard Mary Rose through the use of a variety of techniques, such as statistical analysis, CT scanning, 3D modelling and experimental testing of replicas. The Mary Rose longbow collection is the largest collection that has been discovered and the only collection of Medieval English Longbows. Therefore, understanding the collection is very important not only to understanding the role of archery aboard the ship but also to understanding the functionality of the weapon during this time period.
