Scalable Heralded Single-photon Sources

Lead Research Organisation: University of Southampton
Department Name: Optoelectronics Research Centre (ORC)

Abstract

The single-photon source is the fundamental building block for quantum technologies in photonics, particularly for quantum computing. Currently, no one can run more than a handful of such sources at a time, and their efficiency is limited. In collaboration with Imperial College London and the University of Bath, this project aims to tackle the challenge.
The project will explore the theoretical device operation, device fabrication in the cleanroom and optics labs, and characterise the device performance, both in the classical and quantum domains. The project will involve many of the specialist fabrication approaches and technologies used in Southampton, including direct UV laser writing, Bragg gratings, physical micromachining of photonic substrates and non-linear waveguides.
