New measurement of the weak mixing angle

Lead Research Organisation: Queen Mary University of London
Department Name: Physics

Abstract

This project will measure the fundamental physics parameter of the Standard Model of
Particle Physics - the weak mixing angle. This parameter controls the mixing of the weak
fields and is related to the masses of the W and Z bosons. The measurement will analyse
the Run2 and Run3 data from the ATLAS experiment at CERN's Large Hadron Collider. The
methodology will be to perform a high precision measurement of the Z boson production in
the observable of the leptonic decay angle. This observable can be used to construct a
so-called forward-backward asymmetry of the Z boson decays. The measured asymmetry will be
fitted to extract the weak mixing angle. The fits will also simultaneously constrain the
proton's parton density functions which are the largest source of systematic uncertainty.
This measurement is anticipated to reach an accuracy that is competitive to earlier lepton
collider results, and will be ground-breaking in achieving this at a hadron collider for
the first time.
