Description The output of the Tyndall Centre have cut across disciplines, bringing together the natural and social sciences, engineering and economics. Here are 10 areas where we think we have made important contributions:

Aim for two degrees but plan for four. The probabilities of exceeding the 2 degree ambition have increased since 2000 and overshooting 2 degrees is now widely discussed. We raised awareness of the need to plan for increased climate change while keeping the emissions target intact.

The economics of climate change policies. The E3MG energy-environment- economy model at Cambridge University has informed the Stern Review, the IPCC Assessments, UNFCCC negotiations and many governments including Mexico, the second country in the world to have a Climate Change Act.

Decarbonising the UK and China. Tyndall Manchester devised integrated whole economy scenarios for the UK, which we believe influenced the UK government's journey towards national climate change targets. Tyndall Sussex extended the methodology to China, and new work is underway for Russia.

Local impacts of international climate policies. Tyndall UEA and Oxford have examined the problems and benefits to local communities of global policies designed to increase clean energy in developing countries (CDM) and reduce land use emissions by preventing deforestation (REDD), raising awareness of the governance challenges of UNFCCC policies.

Coastal climate change. The Tyndall Coastal Simulator from Tyndall Southampton is the first integrated assessment of a coastal zone, work done on behalf of better science and the people and organisations living on the eroding coastline of North Norfolk.

Urban climate change. Tyndall Newcastle developed the Urban Integrated Assessment Facility (UIAF) to assess the interactions between climate, economy, population and infrastructure in London, the first time an integrated assessment had been applied to a city. It informed the London Plan.

Human dimensions of climate adaptation. Our work on defining the physical and social limits to adaptation, fairness in sharing the burden of adaptation, and societal resilience has underpinned theoretical and practical thinking about the human dimensions of climate change and what motivates society to adapt.

The EU and climate change. Tyndall UEA coordinated the EU-funded ADAM project that involved Europe's centres for excellence in climate change research. The ADAM integrated scenarios show that even with extremely high levels of mitigation, considerable adaptation is needed. The findings of ADAM are published in four volumes by Cambridge University Press.

Engaging the public with climate change. Tyndall Cardiff have helped define effective communication, engagement and behaviour change strategies for use by policy-makers and practitioners. They have introduced evidence to engaging the public with climate change and energy issues.

Co-production of research. Since the inception of the Tyndall Centre we have ensured our research has maximum impact by engaging with stakeholders at the outset of our research. Pathways to Impact are now a standard part of any UK research application.

Training. over fifty PhDs have successfully graduated from the Tyndall Centre partner Universities. We think of our graduates as interdisciplinary geniuses infecting international research and policy with whole-system analysis.
Exploitation Route The Tyndall Centre interdisciplinary partnership and output has continued to grow post its core-funding during 2000-2010. One new University has joined in the UK (Cardiff), bringing onboard new expertise in psychology to complement existing expertise in natural and social sciences, engineering and economics. The Tyndall Centre currently has 218 affiliated members, with about 40 faculty, a solid core of PhD researchers and research fellows. Building on the ten years of core-funded research, our partners collectively published over 60 research papers every year post core-funding, with several papers published in high impact journals and leding to media articles of wide coverage. We have nearly 12 thousand twetter followers, which is a testimony of the quality and interest of our research output.

We have developed a unique new partnership by opening a Tyndall Centre in Fudan University, China. This partnership was praised for its originality by the Journal Nature Climate Change in 2011, and has hosted a number of honourable visits from UK Members of Parliament. Fudan Tyndall Centre is applying Tyndall's interdisciplinary methods and developing a strong capacity in engaging with the Stakeholders of research in the public and private sectors. UK and China researchers are developing common projects on urban sustainability, water and food security, and climate and air quality management. Tyndall UK and Tyndall Fudan are both involved in shaping and supporting the new Future Earth international platform to support research for global sustainability.

The Tyndall partnership has build three unique integrated models that are being developed and used further: (1) the Community Integrated Assessment System, which is developing further research on the interactions between climate change and ecosystems, including agriculture and biodiversity, (2) the Urban Integrated Assessment Facility, which is looking at the interactions between socio-economic development and climate mitigation and adaptation in an increasing number of cities, including in China with our new Fudan partnership, and (3) the Coastal Simulator, which is being developed to explore more in depth the effects of extreme climate change on coastal impacts and adaptation.

Description Contribution to climate policy and actions. Tyndall Centre partners have contributed to national and international climate change related policies and actions through responses to most government inquiries on climate change (3-4 per year), our presence at the UN Conference of the Party (COP), our role on national and international committees and our contributions to the IPCC Assessment reports and other channels. Seven Tyndall researchers contributed to the fifth Assessment report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, which was awarded the Nobel peace prize in 2007, uniquely across all the three working groups reflecting our interdisciplinary expertise. Tyndall Researchers have played key roles in the UK Risk Assessments and in a number of government advisory bodies. Our collective findings have been used to inform in particular the UK Climate Change Act, to determine the appropriate level of carbon reductions commitments, and to highlight the roles or shipping and aviation in the mitigation portfolio. It has also influenced the design and feasibility of the UK adaptation policy and regulatory development. Contribution to new research model. The approach developed by the Tyndall Centre of working with Stakeholders from the onset and across scientific disciplines has been picked up by an impressive range of initiatives in the UK and internationally. The Tyndall model has been expanded to form the UK Living With Environmental Change (LWEC) program, with Tyndall director Andrew Watkinson at its head for several years. Similarly at the national level the UK Infrastructure Research Transition, iBuild Centre, and Centre for Climate Change Economics and Policy and the international level, the new Future Earth research platform for sustainable development all use similar models of interdisciplinary research and strong stakeholder interfaces. Contribution to setting research agendas. Tyndall researchers have organised a number of key conferences which have led to focus climate change research in recent years. For example, the '4 Degrees and Beyond' held in 2008 led to a special issue in the journal Philosophical Transactions, and subsequently led to a large research focus by the European Commission accompanied by investments in research of several tens of thousand Euros. Contribution to international coordination of research. Tyndall-UEA hosts the UK activities office of the Global Carbon Project, which leads the publication of annual updates of Global Carbon Budgets. This activity builds upon Tyndall's extensive expertise in climate mitigation and the communication of research output to the public. Tyndall is now also hosting the European Hub of the Future Earth secretariat, helping to build this important new international platform. The Tyndall Centre has just published its 2018-2022 research strategy and won an ESRC large grant.

Description UCT-UEA Newton PhD partnership on Understanding the Climate System and Coping with Climate Change
Organisation University of Cape Town
Country South Africa
Sector Academic/University
PI Contribution The University of East Anglia (UEA) and the University of Cape Town, South Africa (UCT) have builded a new partnership scheme supporting PhD students conducting research in the areas of 'improving understanding of the climate system - including the ocean and atmosphere' and 'developing capacity to cope with climate change'. The scheme is jointly funded by the Research Councils UK (RCUK) and the National Research Foundation in South Africa (NRF) under the Newton Fund RCUK-NRF International PhD Partnering Scheme. UEA hosted the first cohort of first PhD from UCT in mid-2016.
Collaborator Contribution Both UCT and UEA hosted 5/6 PhD students for periods of 3 (mostly) to 6 months. UCT hosted also two members of the UEA academic staff. The next call for exchanges is out with application deadline in May.
Impact The collaboration is nicely evolving and we have had a growing numbers of activities together, including a workshop in July 2017 and three submitted proposals (1 funded). We have multiple outcomes, the main ones are (initials refer to PhD students who did the internships): MA (UCT), the most benefit she continues to receive is the support system from the Library, the School and Faculty where she sits. There is support for all areas where she needs to develop her research and academic writing skills. In particular, using NVIVO, handling and analysing qualitative data, critical thinking and academic writing skills are some of the critical areas that are valuable for her. For KAQ, one of remarkable experience has been the availability and free access to experts at UEA. He is also benefiting from being at a leading climate research group, in that, he gets to experience first-hand how climate research is being undertaken as well as have access to Climatic Research Unit (CRU) climate data and how it was developed. Through this, he is intellectually developing and also getting a sense of direction on his future career path. For TE, says that there is an awesome cooperation and motherly care from both the Tyndall Director and his host supervisor, Prof. Corinne Le Quere and Rachael Warren respectively as well as the Tyndall and CRU staffs. They are really good academics to work with and always interested in creating opportunities for ones career. For JG, there has been clear benefits to his intellectual development. The improvements to his optimisation of ocean glider data here at UCT could then be applied to ocean glider data in the Indian Ocean, plus other related oceanographic platforms like ARGO float data in the region. This will aid important understanding of air-sea interactions that influence the South-Asian monsoon, one of the biggest climate systems on the globe. He has access to CSIR and has come into contact with individuals in that centre. He had the opportunity to access the facility where the department's ocean gliders are kept and maintained. The facility is called Sea Technology Services located at V&A Waterfront. He had the chance to physically measure the exact same glider used to collect the data he is currently working on, plus also see the oceanographic platforms and instruments available. For MB, given the right access to funds, the department of Oceanography (at UCT) has a great potential to become a world leader in this area as there exists the right forms of leadership in place, as well as motivation, forward thinking, and plenty of energy. It was a privilege to spend time there he concluded.

It was also acted as contact point for the media at the COP with many members of the press dropping by for a comment or quote and to set up interviews with budget authors.
