Computational modelling of separation processes for green continuous pharmaceutical manufacturing

Lead Research Organisation: University of Edinburgh
Department Name: Sch of Engineering

Abstract

Continuous pharmaceutical manufacturing (CPM) has been shown to provide significant cost savings and reduction of material requirements and waste compared to the currently used, yet inefficient, batch methods. With the highest research and development costs of all industrial sectors, and historically increasing commercialisation costs, technological innovation is essential for pharmaceutical firms to remain profitable and sustainable. For the benefits of CPM to be realised by industry, demonstration of its feasibility and viability is paramount. The proposed PhD project looks to focus on the environmental benefits of CPM by process modelling and simulation of drug purification and separation stages. Non-linear programming of separation processes using rigorous thermodynamic modelling will be implemented to provide insights into the best separation process options. This will showcase the green benefits of CPM over the current batch paradigm, and contribute work to further the switch from batch to continuous manufacturing in the pharmaceutical industry today.
