Abstract
Vaccines prevent between 2 and 8 million deaths each year. In this joint project, between the University of Birmingham and GSK Vaccines Institute for Global Health, the student will develop a number of new approaches to maximise the benefit and cost-effectiveness of vaccination, the longevity of the response to the vaccine and the type of response induced. Ultimately, the study will contribute to the development of affordable multi-valent vaccines that can be used in high and low income countries.

Description | Key findings so far include: * identification of antibody isotypes involved in protection and longevity of the response to polysaccharide, conjugate and OMV based Salmonella vaccines * validating a detoxified form of OMV vaccine |
Exploitation Route | This research so far will further vaccine development for all 3 platforms tested, as well as potentially informing global vaccine distribution/application policy (re: identifying vaccines with optimal immune response). |

Results and Impact | WISE is an organisation designed to link women in STEM fields with young girls to encourage exploration of the sciences. Approx 30 students attended an after school club science lesson on polymers, with a practical session on making 'slime' and the chemistry behind it. The students were encouraged to ask questions one-on-one with instructors and at the end were informally quizzed on the science, with responses indicating sucessful leanring and enthusiasm to learn more chemistry. |
