new statistical methodologies and 'big data' analysis strategies in NAFL and NASH
Lead Research Organisation:
University of Cambridge
Department Name: Clinical Biochemistry
Abstract
Using 'big data' analysis and integration approaches with lipidomics, transcriptomic and proteomic data collected from a large cohort of patients with Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD) this project aims to: 1) identify specific mechanisms of disease, which are amenable to pharmacological intervention; 2) identify accurate diagnostic, staging and prognostic biomarkers that facilitate patient stratification for therapeutic intervention; and 3) create a diagnostic pipeline and software, where samples from the patient can be tested for the presence of diagnostic markers and clinicians can easily analyse and interpret the results through user-friendly online or in-house software applications

Description | Visiting PhD student at the EMBL-EBI (European Bioinformatics Institute) |
Organisation | EMBL European Bioinformatics Institute (EMBL - EBI) |
Country | United Kingdom |
Sector | Academic/University |
PI Contribution | As a visiting student, I participate in the lab meetings, offering advice and critical comments on my team member projects. |
Collaborator Contribution | I am a visitor at the Petsalaki group. The members of the team are mainly computational scientists with experience in data analysis. They provide their professional expertise and guidance for my project needs. Additionally, the European Bioinformatics Institute provides a state of the art Hypercomputer (Cluster) to run my data analysis fast and efficiently. |
Impact | NA (Non-Available) |
Start Year | 2017 |
Description | EBI Retreat Summer 2018 - Poster presentation |
Form Of Engagement Activity | A formal working group, expert panel or dialogue |
Part Of Official Scheme? | No |
Geographic Reach | Local |
Primary Audience | Postgraduate students |
Results and Impact | Around 80 postgraduate students and senior scientists (Group leaders and Researchers) from the European Bioinformatics Institute attended a 2-day event with presentations and posters. My role was to prepare and present a poster on my research. The purpose of the event was to familiarise the researchers with the projects of the other teams, giving ideas and valuable comments on their research. Each section was followed by a plethora of questions. |
Year(s) Of Engagement Activity | 2018 |
Description | EBI research talk |
Form Of Engagement Activity | A talk or presentation |
Part Of Official Scheme? | No |
Geographic Reach | Regional |
Primary Audience | Postgraduate students |
Results and Impact | Around 80 people from academia and research attended a 2-day event with talks and posters. Selected phd students and post-docs were called to present their research outcomes. Each talk sparked questions and discussion afterwards which was helpful and gave ideas for the next steps of the project approaches. |

Description | EBI research talk |
Form Of Engagement Activity | A talk or presentation |
Part Of Official Scheme? | No |
Geographic Reach | Local |
Primary Audience | Postgraduate students |
Results and Impact | The research talk took place at the European Bioinformatics Institute. The purpose of my talk was to communicate my research with other researchers and experts in bioinformatics, engaging in debate and getting constructive feedback. Around 20 people attended which asked questions on my analysis, reporting interest on my work. |
