Abstract
Experiencing compassion and how compassion is defined is shaped within and determined by governmentality. As a result, governmentality may enable or limit social practices and interactions between patients and healthcare professionals. The proposed research ascribes to the notion that nurses and health professionals are powerful and capable of self-governing, via their own actions and the benevolent bodies which govern them professionally. Yet, at the same time less powerful to the operation of the political community in which they practice. Governmentality and the way in which the state system operates, to control populations, could have an overall impact on the experiencing of compassionate healthcare practices. This research will contribute to understanding compassionate practices within mental health care and to the knowledge of compassion as a process of governmentality.
The proposed research aims to
1) Explore how compassion is viewed and experienced by those receiving mental health care
2) Identify barriers and drivers to the experiencing of compassionate care
