Abstract
Abstracts are not currently available in GtR for all funded research. This is normally because the abstract was not required at the time of proposal submission, but may be because it included sensitive information such as personal details.

Vacuolar two-pore K+ channels act as vacuolar osmosensors.
in The New phytologist
Description | 1: We found that two rice TPKs target to different types of vacuole in rice, in spite of very similar sequence and transport properties. We showed that the distinct expression patterns are due to specific residues in the C-termini. 2: Our study on HvHKT2;1 is the first to give a detailed report on the role of HKT transporters in a salt tolerant plant. HKT2;1 overexpression improved barley salt tolerance. 3: An in depth patch clamp study of plant TPKs showed that these vacuolar channels are mechanosensitive and that they may constitute hitherto unknown vacuolar osmosensors |
Exploitation Route | findings about salt stress responses and potassium nutrition may be used in efforts to breed/develop more resistant crops |

PI Contribution | An ongoing parnership exists between my group and the partners on the original project to study the role of HKT and TPK in barley This (non-funded) work mainly focusses on obtaining barley transgenics that overexpress both HKT2;3 and HvTPK1 In the context of the above, I also collaborate with Babes-Bolyai University, Romania who will carry out the barley crosses |
