Description | This project was to support a partnership between Researchers in the UK (Leeds, Liverpool) and Japan (Kobe, Hiroshima, Tskuba) to bring together international expertise in regular meetings to progress the computational modelling of systems (cardiovascular, neuromuscular, pulmonary) interactions during exercise. The team aimed to access immobile regional resources (e.g. multi-channel, time-resolved, near-infrared spectroscopy and chemical shift magnetic resonance spectroscopy) through collaboration. This aim has been very successful and has led to multiple publications, particularly using time-resolved, near-infrared spectroscopy (TRS NIRS). We have shown that TRS NIRS can be used to assess the matching of oxygen delivery to utilization in muscle at different depths and that O2 delivery limitations can lead to slowed rate of oxidative phosphorylation in muscle. Applications of this technology after the award finished have included in healthy subjects for academic research and clinical populations (in intensive care and sickle cell anaemia) The team also build sustainable long term links through exchange of young researchers (post-doctoral and post-graduate) between partner laboratories. This aim has been successful with the exchange of several UK and Japanese students between the host labs. Three of these students went on to get personal post-doctoral fellowship fuding to continue their research in other universities. The group also met an additional aim of hosted an international conference on the Systems Biology of Exercise at the University of Leeds in 2012. |
Exploitation Route | These findings have been used to help develop projects investigating the utility of quantitative time-resolved near-infrared spectroscopy in healthy subjects, as clinical tool to monitor adequacy or perfusion in patients in intensive care, and in academic research of exercise in healthy children and in pediatric patients with sickle cell anaemia. Papers associated with this project have been cited 102 times (Scopus, accessed Feb 19, 2017). |
