Abstract
It is recognised that global communication systems are rapidly approaching the fundamental information capacity of current transmission technologies. Saturation of the capacity of the communication systems might have detrimental impact on the economy and social progress and public, business and government activities. The aim of the proposed research is to develop, through theory and experiment, disruptive approaches to unlocking the capacity of future information systems that go beyond the limits of current optical communications systems. The research will combine techniques from information theory, coding, study of advanced modulation formats, digital signal processing and advanced photonic concepts to make possible breakthrough developments to ensure a robust communications infrastructure beyond tomorrow.
Increasing the total capacity of communication systems requires a multitude of coordinated efforts: new materials and device bases, new fibres, amplifiers and network paradigms, new ways to generate, transmit, detect and process optical signals and information itself - all must be addressed. In particular, the role of fibre communications, providing the capacity for a lion share of the total information traffic, is vital. One of the important directions to avoid the so-called "capacity crunch", the exhaust in fibre capacity - is to develop completely new transmission fibres and amplifiers. However, there is also a growing need for complimentary actions - innovative and radically novel approaches to coding, transmission and processing of information.
Our vision is focused on the need to quantify the fundamental limits to the nonlinear channels carried over optical fibres and to develop techniques to approach those limits so as to maximise the achievable channel capacity. The information capacity of a linear channel with white Gaussian noise is well known and is defined by the Shannon limit. Wireless systems can approach this limit very closely - to within fractions of a dB. However, the optical channel is nonlinear. Fibre nonlinearity mixes noise with signal. Therefore, results of the linear theories on capacity can be applied in fibre channels only in the limit of very small nonlinear effects. Optical communication systems are undergoing another revolution with the development of techniques of coherent detection, the ability to detect both the amplitude and the phase of a transmitted signal and use of digital signal processing techniques to reconstruct the original signal. Use of the optical phase in emerging coherent transmission schemes opens up fundamentally new theoretical and technical possibilities most as yet unexplored. The challenge is to understand to what degree optical nonlinearity can also be compensated or, indeed, used to unlock the fibre capacity, maximise both the information transmission rate and the total bandwidth, to determine the fundamental Shannon limit for nonlinear channels and to develop methods to approach this capacity. We propose to explore fundamentally new nonlinear information technologies and to develop a practical design framework based on integration of DSP techniques, novel modulation formats, and novel source and line coding approaches tailored to the nonlinear optical channels. We believe this to be the key to designing the intelligent information infrastructure of the future.

Planned Impact
The proposed programme UNLOC represents a broad and interdisciplinary study and development of visionary concepts and disruptive approaches to unlocking the capacity of the intelligent communication infrastructure that go beyond the limits of current optical communications technology. The first major impact will be felt by the industrial and commercial companies working on practical solutions to increase capacity of future communications systems and maximise the efficiency of the existing optical fibre infrastructure. These include telecommunication service providers: both traditional carriers and internet service providers. Further, manufacturers of telecommunication equipment at all levels: vendors of networks and high-speed transmission equipment, optical fibre and cables, sub-systems and photonic components. Thirdly, the research will benefit policy makers in providing them with the tools in driving the infrastructure to sustain and maximise the productivity and economic growth. This, in turn, will benefit the general public and wider economy through the availability of a ubiquitous and cost-effective communications infrastructure supporting economic growth and access to information and other societal benefits. Impact on the key beneficiaries: We believe the benefits will apply accrue as follows:

Telecommunications/data service providers: The results of this research will aid to both traditional carriers and internet service providers in better planning and evolving their networks, whilst maximising capacity of future communications systems and the efficiency of the existing optical fibre infrastructure.
B. Equipment manufacturers and vendors. The results of UNLOC will be invaluable in designing the equipment to serve the infrastructure of tomorrow maximising the speed and minimising the energy use. This will be the case for all companies contributing to the development of equipment for the infrastructure: at network, system, subsystem and component levels. The results of the research will inform the R&D directions required to be undertaken to ensure the introduction of the disruptive technologies needed to ensure that the overall challenges of providing the necessary capacity to satisfy the growing data demands in the most cost-effective way. The research will inform the strategies for fibre development, and the choice of the transmission medium, either existing or new.
C. Policy makers: Economists have identified the internet as a key driver of increased productivity growth throughout the world. The internet underpins growth in at least two ways. First, for those who produce new ideas and research it has dramatically lowered the costs of communication with fellow researchers and access to the world's knowledge base. This has raised productivity of the generators of new ideas. Second, for those who then use and commercialise these new ideas into products, the internet has also lowered the price of production and enabled whole new business models and services that have benefitted consumers. This requires the provision of an intelligent and appropriate infrastructure to support the new services and its growth in a planned and sustainable manner. The results of the research of this programme will be invaluable in informing and guiding the policy in this area, crucial for the nation's economic success.
The impact outlined will be ensured through a detailed impact plan covering programmes of (a) application and exploitation of the research outputs; (b) widespread and effective communication of these and engagement of industrial partners, policy makers and general public; through the consolidation and enhancement of the team's capability and robust advocacy of science and engineering opportunities presented by UNLOC.

Description | . UNLOC has demonstrated a variety of new techniques to unlock capacity and enhance communication in the nonlinear regime. Many of the proposed techniques, including methods for simultaneously reduce energy consumption, have received widespread industrial attention, particularly by the submarine system vendors, and have been adopted by industry, including Mitsubishi, NEC, Ciena, Huawei, Oclaro, Microsoft, Nokia Bell Labs for practical transmission systems and in future R&D. UNLOC research has, to date, resulted in some 450 outputs (currently on ResearchFish), over 300 journal and conference papers, including 31 invited papers (most in collaboration with industrial partners), in high impact journals in the field, including Optica, Nature Communications, Scientific Reports, and Physical Review Letters. Highlights include: • Showing the possibility to increase the transmission capacity by a factor of 100 (from 10 Terabit/s to 1 Petabit/s) and explaining the limits [1]. • A new transmission method, namely nonlinear Fourier transform (NFT), also known as the inverse scattering method, potentially eliminating capacity degradation due to nonlinearity [2-4], with first estimate of channel capacity for NFT-based transmission systems [5]. • Range of pioneering nonlinearity mitigation techniques, combined pulse-shaping and forward error correction, which led to: (i) transmission distances to be doubled, including multi-channel digital back propagation (DBP) [6,7]; (ii) record multi-channel, multi-terabit/s optical phase conjugation (4 Tbit/s in 2015 [8], 5.7 Tbit/s submitted to OFC2018); (iii) demonstration of capacity above the linear white Gaussian noise channel using regenerative communication channels [9]. DBP is now part of how all practical transmission systems are designed. • Identified transceiver noise and associated noise-signal nonlinear beating as a fundamental limit to DBP gains [10] - of huge significance to transceiver design. • First application of machine learning in multi-core/multi-mode fibre transmission [11]. • Development of high-capacity transceivers operating at up to QAM256 and demonstrating record 1.125 Tb/s super-channels using a single wideband receiver [12,13]; formed the basis of a major press release by Mitsubishi (one of only 10 press releases across company, and featured in 100 national and international media articles and TV reports). • Development of low-complexity transceivers with significant capacity increases in metro, access and inter-data centre networks, including the first demonstration of Alamouti-coding simplified coherent transceiver [14] and Kramers-Kronig direct-detection receiver [15]. • Proposed mutual information (MI) as a metric to quantify fibre transmission system performance (cf. previously used pre-FEC BER, which was shown to be inappropriate for systems using soft FEC) [16]. MI is now the metric of choice within the research community. • Demonstrated increases in nonlinear network throughput by adapting channel power, using adaptive transceivers, subsequently adopted by industry (e.g. Ciena's Liquid Spectrum) [17] In each of these areas we have achieved world-leading capability and high visibility for the team's work, as evidenced by the presence of UNLOC at the world's largest conferences: Optical Fiber Communications (OFC) conference and the European Conference on Optical Communication (ECOC). A number of co-Is have given invited talks and been involved in both of these conferences during the period of the Programme. P. Bayvel was a member of ECOC2013 Organising Committee, S. Savory served as Program Chair, General Chair, and Chair of the Steering Committee of OFC. R. Killey, B. Thomsen, A. Ellis and D. Lavery have served on OFC and ECOC TPC. Impact and collaborations The UNLOC team worked with leading UK Universities including Southampton, Bristol, Cambridge, and UK companies such as BT, BBC, NPL, Oclaro, Phoenix Photonics and Optoscribe. International partnerships covered all sectors of networks and content providers (BT, Microsoft, Deutsche Telekom), fibre equipment and sub-system manufacturers (Corning, OFS, Sterlite Technologies, Ciena, ADVA, Mitsubishi, NEC, Nokia Bell Labs (USA, Germany and France), Xtera, Finisar and Huawei Technologies as well as international universities and government labs (including Novosibirsk (Russia), Chalmers and Royal Institute of Technology (Sweden), Tianjin University (China), Ben-Gurion, Tel Aviv and Hebrew University (Israel), and Technical University of Munich (Germany). Collaborative work took place through student internships and longer-terms visits, joint experiments and jointly developed theory and modelling/simulations software, technical advice/consultancy and provisions of state-of-the art fibre, components and subsystems and their evaluation. The UNLOC digital signal processing algorithms suite and experimental test-bed infrastructure has frequently been used by academia and industry world-wide to test components, sub-systems, coding algorithms and DSP to achieve record results bringing added value and major impact for large companies and SMEs. Description | Ubiquitous information connectivity and the availability of a high-capacity, low-delay, resilient and secure communications infrastructure have transformed people's lives, improved livelihoods and are essential to the economic prosperity of all nations. The vital importance of efficient remote working, online learning and tele-medicine has been vividly illustrated during the COVID19 pandemic. These capabilities have been enabled by a network of optical fibres, which underpin the global communications infrastructure, carrying >99% of all digital data. The research in UNLOC and the highlighting of the importance of optical communications as a critical infrastructure has directly contributed to the UK Government policy changes, the inquiry on 'UK telecommunications infrastructure and the UK's domestic capability', the formation of Telecoms Diversification Task Force and the Telecoms Supply Chain Diversification (TSCD) Advisory Council, as well as the setting up of UKTIN (The UK Telecoms Innovation Network (UKTIN) and the restructuring of DCMS. It is the research within UNLOC that has answered many of the questions of how to ensure the availability of a digital connectivity and is behind many of the developments in optical fibre communications, as well as being a global advocate for their importance to society. The programme transformed the way optical communication systems are designed and analyzed and has major impact on fundamental research and key developments optical fibre transmission and optical network architectures. Every sector of the population and Government/private agencies has benefited from this research. (a) General public including (i) children, (ii) the elderly, (iii) patients and disabled, (iv) rural communities, the possibility of having ubiquitous access to bandwidth with low-delay will enable the transformation of people's lives at every stage of development: (i) children to access educational services, courses, university laboratories and expert teaching at a push of a broadband button, eliminating time lost due to illness, non-availability of specialist teachers or access to facilities; (ii) the elderly & disabled - to allow real-time monitoring and remote healthcare for housebound individual in need of care and company (iii) patients and disabled - access to leading specialists, tests and even treatment without the need to travel to appointments; (iv) rural communities - to reduce the isolation and improve the connectivity of the entire country will help reduce concentration of population in urban areas and improve national prosperity. (b) Government & government agencies, service providers: through enormous cost-savings made from the provision of flexible, secure, high-bandwidth connectivity, as well as potential improvements in productivity through availability of broadband digital services and have demonstrated that these lead to additional increases in per annum productivity by as much as 0.4%, where total productivity growth in most economies is about 1.5%. (c) Manufacturing/critical infrastructure - advances in communications and infrastructure have improved productivity and, thus, profitability. Introducing further self-driving elements will further reduce maintenance costs and improve competitiveness and very importantly - resilience and reliability. Optical networks forming the core of the communications infrastructure also control all other infrastructure - transport (rail, roads, air traffic) and utilities - their reliability and resilience and the inter-operability is key to national wellbeing, security and safety. Apart from the outstanding publications the programme has inspired and developed younger researchers. It has helped to create new school of optical communications systems and networks research with many outstanding PhD students and researchers, who are now scientific and industrial leaders in their own right, working in industry and academia, developing the next generation of the digital communications infrastructure around the world. it has identified key new directions on future transformation of optical networks making them more intelligent, adaptive, resilient, and secure and continues to lead, influence and inspire and transform research and applications worldwide. The programme proved highly effective in science advocacy and policy shaping, outreach and public engagement through its annual Open Day and workshops. The programme's message for the need of ubiquitous, high-capacity and secure optical fibre infrastructure has been presented in numerous fora. This included presentations to the Industry & Parliament Trust on 'Tech, Media and Telecoms' and Polina Bayvel's meeting with Science and Technology Select Committee members from both Houses of Parliament as part of the EPSRC RISE Connect event. These activities attracted significant attention from key stakeholders and policy makers, including Future Digital Infrastructures (DCMS) and National Infrastructure Commission and playing a key part in the debates leading to the establishment of the Digital Infrastructure Investment Fund by the Government to improve the capacity communication infrastructure. Highlighting the importance of the high-capacity, ubiquitous and secure communications infrastructure and the r,ole in it of optical fibre communications has directly led to the establishment of the government telecoms diversification taskforce and its ultimate findings: https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/telecoms-diversification-taskforce-findings-and-report/telecoms-diversification-taskforce-findings-and-report. These strong messages, supported by the research and UNLOC, were taken up by UK Government through a series of government commitments on ubiquitous, high-capacity broadband, with the most recent government paper published in February 2022 - https://commonslibrary.parliament.uk/research-briefings/cbp-8392/ - on the Government's gigabit-capable broadband targets and policy to support the roll-out of broadband by industry, something argued as essential by UNLOC throughout the project duration and subsequently under the follow-up TRANSNET programme. The work under UNLOC was also highlighted in the OFCOM Technology Futures report' Spotlight on the technologies shaping communications for the future' . These significant impacts were culmination of both the research and advocacy carried out throughout the programme. In the early stages of the programme, the UNLOC Advisory Board member, former MEP Malcolm Harbour, UNLOC disseminated the project concepts and need for advanced fibre-optic infrastructure. Andrew Ellis co-organised a Royal Society discussion meeting on 'Communication Networks Beyond the Capacity Crunch', and a joint UNLOC/Photonic HyperHighway meeting was held at the Royal Society in 2017 to discuss the strategy for evolving optical communication infrastructure and promote the UK global leadership in these areas. Wide-ranging outreach activities were undertaken by the entire team with annual Big Bang Fair participation across the UK, with multiple events focused towards the International Year of Light in 2015. Aston hosted a 'Year of Light' event in Birmingham Central Library attended by more than 12,500 people, mostly children, and Prof Bayvel gave numerous talks: her 2014 Royal Society Lecture on 'Communicating with Light' has been viewed nearly 12,000 times. Prof Ellis gave a talk at the 2014 British Science Festival on "The Broadband Capacity Crunch". UNLOC featured on the BBC flagship show, Click (worldwide audiences of 300 million viewers), and sponsored a live 360-degree video demonstration at the OFCity workshop at OFC 2017 as well as numerous communication videos explaining the research. The enormous success of UNLOC researchers and the successful career development strategy UNLOC can truly claim to have provided a new generation of leadership in optical fibre/optical communications research for the UK. As already mentioned above, a major contribution has been by way of input into UK Government policy - following significant advocacy through the programme, the UK Government has revised its policies on viewing the communications networks as part of the critical infrastructure. It set up a telecoms diversification taskforce with a focus on the importance of telecoms https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/telecoms-diversification-taskforce-findings-and-report/telecoms-diversification-taskforce-findings-and-report. The realisation that future wireless networks require robust, high-capacity and ubiquitous optical fibre infrastructure has led to the creation of "telecoms hubs" future telecoms systems platforms allowing for collaborations across telecoms domains. |

Description | A landline-distance straight line optical transmission testbed has been completed, which emulates installed fibre optic infrastructure used by communications companies throughout the world, and can help investigate new and legacy network configurations. The system consists of the latest single mode fibre donated by Sterlite Technologies. The fibre is spliced into 15x100km spans (19 dB/span) amplified using state of the art dual-stage erbium doped fibre amplifiers (EDFAs). The amplifier design provides a maximum output power of +23dBm, variable gain from 15 to 32dB, mid stage loss of up to 10dB, and wide optical bandwidth allowing up to 96 channels to be simultaneously amplified. The design is equivalent to that used by leading optical communication companies such as Alcatel-Lucent or Ciena. |

This now includes 16 ECL lasers and an SS-ASE, digital transceiver with 12x92 GSample/s 8-bit digital-to-analogue converters (DAC). This means we can generat signals with a symbol rate up to 64GBd, compared to 10GBd previously. We can also now perform high order modulation formats up to 256QAM. The test bed has been updated for full C-band transmission capability using the following: - Spectrally shaped amplifier spontaneous emission noise (SS-ASE) to emulate the generation of full C-band transmission - 3xHigh power (33 dBm output power) optical amplifiers (EDFAs) to transmit full C-band - A recirculating optical loop with state-of-the-art optical fibres is used for long haul C-band transmissions. Specialist fibres now include Corning® Vascade® EX2000. We also have use of anti-resonant hollow core fibre produced by Southampton University Optical Research Centre. Mitsubishi Electric Research Laboratories used the test bed for a joint MERL-UNLOC paper on a dual-carrier 1Tb/s signal generation, suitable for current commercial systems. Aston University, as part of the UNLOC programme, have also used this test bed for joint work to analyse nonlinearity. Joint work with Southampton University to characterise the new anti-resonant hollow core fibre. The test bed was used for joint work with Corning on a single span transmission, where we achieved a record spectral efficiencyxdistance product. Joint work underway with Xtera to extend transmission bandwidth beyond C and L band. Numerous resulting publications presented at OFC and ECOC during 2015/16/17. |

Title | METHOD OF NON-LINEARITY COMPENSATION IN OPTICAL FIBRE COMMUNICATIONS |
Description | A nonlinearity compensation technique for a CO-OFDM transmission system in which a proportion (e.g. up to 50%) of OFDM subcarriers is transmitted along with a phase-conjugate copy (PCP) on another subcarrier (replacing a data carrying subcarrier) to enable nonlinear distortion compensation. Nonlinear distortion experienced by closely spaced subcarriers in an OFDM system is highly correlated. The PCPs are used at the receiver to estimate the nonlinear distortion (e.g. nonlinear phase shift) of their respective original subcarriers and other subcarriers close to the PCP. With this technique, the optical fibre nonlinearity due to the Kerr effect in OFDM systems can be effectively compensated without the complexity of DBP or 50% loss in capacity of the phase conjugate twin wave (PC-TW) technique. Moreover, the technique proposed herein can be effectively implemented in both single polarization and PMD systems, in both single channel and WDM systems. |

Results and Impact | UNLOC held a conference in partnership with EPSRC funded Photonics Hyperhighway programme. The event was held at The Royal Society on 2 June 2017 and involved speakers from both programmes and external speakers from industry and academia. PhD students and researchers created and presented posters for the event and engaged with the audience to communicate the details of their research. There was also a talk from UNLOC artist-in-residence, Dara Rigal. Dara presented some examples of her work to translate optical communications to a wide audience through art and explained her creative process. All talks were recorded and have been made available to the general public via the UCL Engineering faculty YouTube channel. Plans were made with colleagues at University of Southampton to work on further science communication projects through art created by Dara Rigal. |

Results and Impact | As part of the OFcity workshop at OFC 2017 (the world's largest optical fibre communications conference) in Los Angeles, UNLOC organised and sponsored a live 360 video stream from the UCL Optical Networks lab in London to LA, USA. UNLOC provided participants in the workshop with Google Cardboard headsets to have an immersive live view inside the London lab where much of UNLOC's experimental work takes place. UNLOC PhD student, Daniel Elson, presented a short talk about the lab and the work UNLOC is able to undertake in the lab. The live stream was available via YouTube and can still be viewed there as archived footage. There were over 50 participants in the workshop and the YouTube video had 78 views as of 24 March 2017. The archived footage was promoted via the UNLOC website and twitter account. The OFCity workshop was focused on the viability of virtual reality technology for live events and so this activity was an excellent demonstration of what can currently be achieved. The audience was able to see that current technology produces a time lag in the live link, so seamless interactive live events will require improvements to technology. The audience was, however able to see that basic interactivity is possible as Daniel Elson was able to answer questions from the audience in the live stream. |

Results and Impact | In the second press release for 2016, we described the development of a new design for optical receivers for access networks. The design is simpler and much more affordable that current optical receivers thus addressing a major challenge in the deployment of fibre-to-the-home on a large scale. The release was picked up by multiple technology media outlets and bloggers in the UK. The news caught on in India where it was featured in more than 20 news sites ultimately reaching the Times of India - the third largest newspaper in India. Primary outcome of this campaign in the increased awareness among the general public about optical communications, fibre-to-the-home technology and how this affects their lives. In addition, our research group at UCL becomes more visible to the larger technology sector and will hopefully attract new industry partners and lead to new public-private partnerships. The lead author of the study, Dr. Sezer Erkilinc has already been contacted by Intebridge Capital (www.intebridge.com) - a leading venture capital in the investment and industrialization of cutting-edge technologies founded by Cambridge Alumni. Technology reporters have requested further information about the project to be featured in more in-depth publications in the media in the future. |

Results and Impact | Prof Polina Byavel has been featured in a film on display at the Telegraph Museum, Cornwall, talking about the UK achievements in communications. The film tells visitors the story of how Porthcurno was the location where the first undersea telegraph cables came ashore in 1870. It goes on to explain how Porthcurno become the hub of communication for the Empire and by the 1920 was the most important communication station in the world. It also tells some of the story of fibre optics. Prof Bayvel talks about the role played by some our most important scientists and engineers (Faraday, Thompson, Morse etc) and about the importance of optical fibres today and the challenges that face us as demand grows year by year. The film is viewed by hundreds of visitors to the museum each week in peak season. |

The photonics industry group is responsible for collating economic impact data to inform policy decisions, disseminating key industry information, coordinating photonics events and acting as a conduit for downstreaming good ideas. Results and Impact | UNLOC PhD students, post-doctoral researchers, and Investigator Dr Benn Thomsen attended the Big Bang Fair London, a Science and Engineering Fair to encourage more pupils to study STEM subjects. UNLOC had demonstrations to show pupils how data can be transmitted over optical fibre, and how the internet reaches the home. Over 5000 pupils from across London attended. Teachers took UNLOC literature to use in their schools, and some expressed interest in a school visit from UNLOC researchers. |

Results and Impact | WAVE 2022 was a one-day conference held at the BT Tower, sponsored by the Sub-Optic Foundation to attract young people to the field of subsea communications - and with prominent members of the sub-sea community - it was an important Advocacy event: https://wave.subopticfoundation.org/ TRANSNET team played a major role in the organisation of the event, and Professor Polina Bayvel was one of the prominent figures at the event. In addition to being one of the key speakers at the Round Table discussion on the range of opportunities available in Subsea, she also presented her thoughts on defining moments in the breakthrough of optical networks; followed by an engaging debate on the topic with Gary Waterworth, Network Investment EMEA at META and Maja Summers, Senior Submarine Commercial Manager at Vodafone. TRANSNET was also officially recognised as a partner of the event for supporting the organisers with planning of the event. The event was livestreamed to schools around the world, and was attended by both established and up-and-coming figures in the field of subsea communications. |
