Lead Research Organisation: Queen Mary University of London
Department Name: Physics

Abstract

Queen Mary University of London (QMUL) supports approximately 800 PhD students within the faculty of Science and Engineering which consists of the Schools of Mathematical Science, Engineering & Materials, Biological and Chemical Science, Electronic Engineering and Computer Science, as well as Physics and Astronomy. In addition, our four institutes of Life Sciences, Bioengineering, Materials Research, and Advanced Data Science facilitate multi-disciplinary approaches to research. The faculty is part of five UKRI Centres for Doctoral Training, and four Doctoral Training Partnership Programmes with NERC, STFC, BBSRC and EPSRC. The quality of research from QMUL is outstanding with 90% of science and engineering submissions to the REF 2014 exercise judged to be internationally excellent or world leading, and more than a third authored by our PhD students.

PhD studentships are advertised widely including http://www.findaphd.com/ as well as our own website (https://www.qmul.ac.uk/postgraduate/research/) which includes a searchable index of available studentships, online application forms and contact details. Candidate selection is based on excellence, and a common application deadline of 31st January ensures the selection of the highest quality candidates across all funding opportunities. QMUL academic staff apply for studentships through an annual application round advertised internally through Directors of Research, and aligned with the strategic aims of the faculty.

All students are part of the QMUL Doctoral College (http://www.doctoralcollege.qmul.ac.uk/) which provides a rich and innovative research environment, overseeing recruitment, admission, induction, training and development, academic progression, examination and career opportunities. Our students participate in comprehensive technical, as well as transferrable skills training offered through the Doctoral College. A highlight is the annual Graduate Festival (https://qmulgradfest.wordpress.com/) - a week of PhD student-led events supported through the Doctoral College. All students may apply for up to £2000 from the Postgraduate Research Support Fund to support fieldwork and conference attendance. In addition, the Doctoral College Initiative Fund is available to support up to £1000 for student-led research events that enrich the research community at Queen Mary.
